Climbing in Aguja de la S

Climbing in Aguja de la S

The Aguja de la S is one of the most aesthetic and accessible granite spires in the Fitz Roy massif, offering high-quality granite climbing, a true alpine environment, and direct views toward the Cerro Torre valley. This program is designed as a flexible climbing experience of up to 7 days, adapted to weather conditions, mountain conditions, and the real skill level of the team.

Rather than following fixed dates or rigid schedules, climbing the Aguja de la S is approached as a progressive expedition, where the main objective is to attempt the peak when the right weather window opens, maximizing safety and the chances of success.

Program Approach

The program begins with a preparatory phase of climbing around El Chaltén, including single-pitch and multi-pitch routes. This stage allows for assessment of technical level, physical condition, and rope-team dynamics, while refining pacing, efficiency, and communication.

During this period, training is focused on the specific demands of the objective: Patagonian granite climbing, multi-pitch systems, transitions, rope management, and efficient movement in alpine terrain. When weather and mountain conditions align, the team moves in to attempt the Aguja de la S.

The Climb

The Aguja de la S offers multiple climbing options on excellent-quality granite, combining technical rock climbing, possible snow or glacier sections depending on the season, and a distinctly alpine character.

The specific route and strategy are chosen according to current conditions, the climber’s experience, and the state of the line. The summit day is long and demanding, requiring solid time management, physical efficiency, and constant attention to changing weather, key elements that are developed during the preparatory climbing days.
