Cerro Madsen
Classic technical ascent near Fitz Roy, combining sustained snow terrain and a short easy climbing section.
Cerro Madsen
Cerro Madsen is one of the most classic and panoramic ascents in the Laguna de los Tres sector of El Chalten. Located beside the Glaciar de los Tres and very close to the Fitz Roy massif, it offers a technical mountaineering experience on snow terrain in one of the most emblematic landscapes of Southern Patagonia.
From the summit, climbers enjoy direct and close views of Fitz Roy, the Glaciar de los Tres, and the ridge system above the Laguna de los Tres basin, in an open and exposed high-mountain environment.
Program Approach
The ascent of Cerro Madsen is generally organized as a 1- or 2-day program, depending on the level of the group and current conditions.
The program is designed for 1 or 2 climbers, allowing for a personalized and safety-focused experience.
The approach follows the classic trail toward Laguna de los Tres, and from there the ascent continues on snow terrain to the base of the final section.
During the climb, techniques include:
– Snow progression
– Crampon and ice axe use
– Short-rope technique on easy terrain
The Ascent
The route combines sustained snow slopes with a final section of easy rock or mixed climbing, where short-rope technique is used to ensure efficient progression.
Although technically accessible, Cerro Madsen requires good physical condition, basic mountain experience, and the ability to adapt to the changing weather patterns of Patagonia.
It is an ideal objective for climbers who want to move beyond trekking and experience a real technical ascent close to Fitz Roy.
