Bariloche

Bariloche

San Carlos de Bariloche and Nahuel Huapi National Park offer one of the most complete settings in Northern Patagonia for hut-based ski touring, combining efficient logistics, varied mountain terrain, and the character of a historic refuge network. These programs are designed for skiers who want to move through the mountains with a balance of quality skiing, mountain atmosphere, and flexible objectives.

In contrast to the more glaciated and remote terrain of Southern Patagonia, Bariloche offers a dynamic alpine environment of Andean forest, open slopes, bowls, and granite ridgelines with constant views toward Nahuel Huapi Lake and the surrounding Andes. Depending on the group, the program can be organized from a single hut or as a traverse linking different refuges over several days.

Program Options

Programs in Bariloche can be organized in different formats, depending on conditions and the group’s goals:

3- to 7-day programs based at a single mountain hut
Hut-to-hut traverses linking classic sectors of the range
Progressive itineraries focused on improving technique and terrain reading in ski touring

Refugio Frey

The area around Refugio Frey is one of the most recognizable ski touring settings in Patagonia. Surrounded by granite towers and sharp alpine forms, it offers a combination of wide bowls, sustained lines, and a very distinctive mountain character.

The skiing develops mainly in the Van Titter valley, where the terrain allows both aesthetic descents and more technical options depending on snow conditions and the level of the group.

Refugio Jakob

The Refugio Jakob sector offers a stronger sense of remoteness and open mountain terrain. With access to broad valleys and longer approaches, it is especially well suited for ski touring programs that prioritize continuity, solitude, and a more expansive mountain feel.

It is an excellent area for groups looking for multi-day backcountry skiing, with steady ascents, good snow quality under the right conditions, and a strong Patagonian atmosphere.

Refugio Lopez

The Refugio Lopez sector offers more direct access from Bariloche and opens the door to sustained slopes with broad views over Nahuel Huapi Lake. It works well both for shorter objectives and as a starting point for longer traverses.

Because of its accessibility and terrain options, Lopez is a very versatile area, useful both for stronger single-day ski mountaineering outings and for linking with other sectors of the refuge network.

Each program begins with an assessment of the group’s level, expectations, and current mountain conditions. Based on this, we define the most appropriate itinerary, always prioritizing safety, snow quality, and the overall logic of the route.

The combination of mountain huts, varied terrain, and proximity to town makes Bariloche an exceptional destination both for skiers with previous experience and for those looking to keep progressing in a classic Patagonian alpine environment.
